A network of this type is disclosed in "Die Strassenselektion ATU-systema" published in the Deutsche Telekom GmbH, Report 75/01 dated September 1975. The transmission medium in this known system is provided with a number of control elements, each of which is assigned to a section of the medium which is not physically controlled by any other control element. Each control element has a function generator which generates a code, which, when transmitted over the medium, is decoded by the control element assigned to this section and controls the section according to the code. In this known system, each function generator generates a pulse code which is used to control the section in which the function generator is assigned to.
A disadvantage of this known system is that, although the information of all the function generators are transmitted on the medium, the information transmitted from one function generator to the next control element is merely the result of the preceding code, i.e. the following control element is controlled according to the present code. Thus, the number of codes transmitted on the medium must be relatively small to enable the system to be implemented economically.
In some telecommunication networks, there are some sections which, although they are physically controlled by the same control element, do not have common transmit and receive circuits. This is particularly true for sections which are separated by several switching points and have different transmit and receive circuits which are controlled by a common control element.
